MAP - Political Finance Information Flow

Public disclosure entails a flow of political account data from reports to the public domain. The chart below demonstrates these flows. In countries where account data is made public, it is usually through an official newspaper that is often not widely accessible. Starting with disclosure through the print media; IFES applied two approaches to streamline the flow of political account information to the public. These included the use of freedom of information laws and the internet to place information in the public domain.

Stage 1 Information Flow

One of the overarching goals of the MAP projects has been to enhance accountability by encouraging better-informed decision making by voters at the polls and by enhancing enforcement of the law. In addition to having access to the Internet in a way that the general public may not, CSOs, media, and scholars all play a key role in meeting these objectives. They can achieve this by conducting activities within their respective professional spheres and by sharing information with each other. In this way they can perform two functions outlined in the chart below. First, they can provide information to the electorate. Second, they can provide information to relevant government bodies and the judiciary.
